You’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions moms have when planning a family portrait session.
For family photos in Dallas, I always recommend choosing outfits that feel timeless, comfortable, and coordinated without perfectly matching. Soft neutrals, warm tones, natural textures, and pieces with movement photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs — on your family.
Start with Mom
I usually recommend choosing mom’s outfit first. Find something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, then build the rest of the family’s wardrobe around it. Long dresses, soft fabrics, subtle textures, and pieces with movement are some of my favorites to photograph.
From there, choose complementary colors for everyone else rather than dressing the entire family in the same color.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
The goal isn’t for everyone to look identical. Instead, choose a simple color palette and mix different tones and textures within it. For this family session, the outfits worked so beautifully because everything felt intentional without feeling overly styled. Each person still looked like themselves, while the wardrobe came together as a whole.
